I just finished reading Sounds of the River.
I hardly read one book a year, but this is one book that I can’t put down. It’s so real, like “So Far from the Bamboo Grove” that I read more than 10 years ago!
Da, I wish you all the best in your life. Perhaps the readers are curious if you do go back to Yellow River again, or had any reunion with your family. Any sequel to the book? Please?
After reading ‘Colours of the Mountain’ and ‘Sounds of the River’ recently, I felt extremely motivated. No other book, including those from renown motivational speakers, ever had that effect on me. I was so inspired and felt as if the sky’s no longer the limit but within my reach. As I am about to enter my first year of University, the timing of me discovering this book couldn’t be any better. I needed this magical touch badly. From secondary school, I only had a slightly above average score although I knew I was capable of doing much much better (proven by my primary record); even those around have portrayed their disappointment in me openly as I failed time and time to do my best. I knew what the problem was but just couldn’t bring myself to act on it. And in these books, I found the perfect remedy – enthusiasm. I am now mentally prepared to enter University and achieve all that I can in life. Chen Da is truly my hero. =)
I work in a bookstore and took home Brothers when it arrived. I loved the book. I dont know how it is possible I never heard of Da Chen before. Now I want to read all the books. Brothers was unpredictable and profound. I had to keep reminding myself that this was written about 20th century China, not ancient China. The poverty and tradition seem timeless.
BROTHERS is absolutely magnificent. It’s one of the finest novels about contemporary China that has been written. The characters were all so real to me that I could envision every one, and in spite of my regret that the story was ending, the finally pages were so skillfully wrought that the finishing was exactly right. I’m looking forward to more books from you!
Da, I just finished ‘Colors of the Mountain’ and I can’t express enough how your words cut to the core. They danced across the pages of this book. You are truly a remarkable man and your accomplishments are a credit to your parents love for you. Thank you for sharing your story. As a Mother of two young girls adopted from China I hope to expose them to fine literature and you rank high on the list. Roberta
Da I have read both Sounds of the river and Colours of the Mountain and i couldn’t put either of them down. Yellow Stone sounds like a beautiful place as i was reading i felt like i was there. hope you carry on writing great books.
I found a copy of your book “Sounds of the River” in the Salvation army on 96th street and broadway, (Manhattan). I am sorry Da, I only paid $2.00.
I truly loved this book. It was like holding pearls in your hand. Thank you for your words. I pray to Jesus or Buddha that you are well :) I am putting up my poetry site and will send you the link when it is done…
The book Colors of the Mountain read like a novel. I would love to know what has happened to Da Chens parents and siblings particularly Jin and the wonderful sisters. Also, I hope writing is now his full time career.
